Goddesses of the Celtic Wheel Project
This project was created based on the inspiration from Amantha Murphy and her book “The way of the Seabhean”.
For thousands of years, prior to the arrival of Christianity, there had been a Goddess led culture throughout the world and especially in Ireland, where they were both celebrated and revered.
I was inspired to create and paint some of these Irish Goddesses from the teachings of Amantha Murphy on the ‘Goddesses of the Celtic Wheel’, which she writes about in depth in her book “The way of the Seabhean” www.celticsouljourneys.com
These paintings capture the essence of what these Goddesses represent for me and the gifts they want to share.

The Goddess ‘Tlachtga’
In ancient Irish tradition the year actually finishes on October 31st and the New Year begins on November 1st. This is the North West Point of the Wheel and it is where the Goddess ‘Tlachtga’ resides. It is the time of Samhain and a time to remember our Ancestors.
The Goddess ‘An Cailleach’ (The Crone)
The Goddess ‘Cailleach’ resides at the North point of the Wheel. This is time of the Winter Solstice and the shortest day of the year (Dec 21st).

The Goddess ‘Bridgid/Bridget’
The Goddess ‘Bridgid/Bridget’ resides at the North East point of the Wheel. This is the time of ‘Imbolc’ (February 1st) and the first day of spring.
The Goddess ‘Boann’
The Goddess ‘Boann’ resides on the East point of the Wheel. This is the time of the Spring Equinox, (March 20th-21st) and we have reached equal day and equal night.

The Goddess ‘Maedbh’
The Goddess ‘Maedbh’ resides on the South East point of the Wheel. This is the time of Bealtaine (30th April- 1st May) and marks the beginning of summer.
The Goddess ‘Áine’
The Goddess ‘Áine’ resides on the South point of the Wheel. She is our fairy queen. This is the time of the Summer Solstice (June 21st) and it is the longest day of the year.

The Goddess ‘Tailltiu’
The Goddess ‘Tailltiu’ resides on the South West point of the Wheel. This is the harvest time of the year and is celebrated on 31st July – 1st August.
The Goddess ‘Macha’
The Goddess ‘Macha’ resides on the West point of the Wheel. This is the time of the Autumn Equinox (September 21st) and we have reached equal day and equal night again.
*Artists note on the Goddess ‘Macha’
“This is a painting that I have yet to paint for she has yet to show herself to me. Until that time comes I await patiently”

This is my original painting “Remembering”.
I remember when I finished work on this painting that I got a sense or a feeling of ancient times gone by and the stories that are part of that fabric of time. Stories that are forgotten, but a part of me hoped that somehow they wouldn’t be completely lost forever.
“I awaken to memories.
Of times past.
Stories of old, yet to be told.
And harmony
Reigned.”.

Here is a verse that I wrote about the Water Goddess. ********* You make your presence known, Whether you roar like thunder. Or lap easily at the seashore, Whether you rush furiously Along a fast flowing river, Carrying all before you and in you, Or trickle gently In a murmuring stream, For... I hear you, Just as the blood flows in my veins, So too, do you Flow in the veins of the Great Mother, Bringing with you Life of immeasurable Beauty. ********** Prints (A3 and A4 sizes) and Greeting Cards are available for purchase on my website www.helenosullivan.com/artist/ ...
